Want to record some audio from a website that streams music? Getting Windows to record all those sounds isn’t always so easy or straightforward.
The stereo mix is an incredible feature whereby you can play the sound that is being recorded by your microphone directly to your speakers. So as you talk into the microphone, the soundboard will be played in real-time to your speakers.
Stereo Mix is a tool that allows the user to record the output stream of a computer such as broadcasting radio, speaker outputs, live streaming audios, even system sounds.
The stereo mix comes default with some sound cards, the majority of a portion of Windows 10 users don’t enjoy it by default as it is disabled on their computers.
If you want to enable the Stereo Mix on your computer, then go for these easy steps.

Enable Stereo Mix
Find out the audio icon and then click on “Recording Devices” to open up the proper settings pane.
On clicking the blank area, check out both, “View Disabled Devices” and “View Disconnected Devices” options. There you will find out “Stereo Mix” option. Right-click on “Stereo Mix” and click “Enable” to be able to use it.
Not Able to Find Stereo Mix
If you are not able to find Stereo on your device. There might be two reasons:
- If your system is very old then your audio chipset got outdated and does not provide this feature.

Why was it removed in Windows 10?
The stereo mix is not completely removed — it was a driver-specific feature only supported by specific hardware. Many sound-cards don’t have this support. This isn’t a case of Microsoft being evil, or backing the recording industry.
What is the Solution For Windows 10?
I found out two programs that will help you to stream audio. These include Virtual Audio Cable (VAC), and JACK. You need to spend few cents on VAC.
The best program I’ve found for Windows 10 Stereo Mix is VB-Audio Cable.
VB-Audio Cable essentially creates a single output and single input. The audio on the output is routed to the input. Any audio program can record this virtual ‘input’.
How to Install VB-Audio Cable
Installation is very simple. Here’s how you do it…
- Download VB-Audio Cable from the website
- Unzip the downloaded file
- Run VBCable_Setup.exe or VBCable_Setup_64.exe
- Step through the wizard
- Optional: reboot once you’re done
Once it’s installed, go to Control Panel > Sound and check that your new audio input and output have been created.
VB-Audio Cable also comes with a control panel. It requires no installation… just open VBCable_ControlPanel.exe from the Downloaded ZIP folder. Here, you can select Sample Rates up to 96Khz. You can also monitor audio levels.
